Leman Swine Conference to discuss science-driven solutions

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine will host the 37th annual Allen D. Leman Swine Conference Sept. 18-21 at RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minn.

The Leman Conference is considered one of the international swine community’s premier events, drawing swine veterinarians, producers, research scientists, industry experts and government officials from around the world.

The Leman Conference presentations and seminars address on a wide range of swine-related topics such as diseases, production and consumer issues.

There will also be a two-day preconference program that includes trade show exhibits and scientific poster presentations and presentation of the Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award to Dr. Paul Yeske of the Swine Vet Center, P.A., St. Peter, Minn.

Keynote sessions at the Leman Conference include:

A Wall Street View of the Protein Markets, presented by Farha Aslam, managing director, Stephens Inc.
Elimination of PRRSV from North America: Uniting the Clans! presented by Scott Dee, professor, University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine
How Do We Feed a Growing World Without Destroying the Planet? presented by Jon Foley, director of the University of Minnesota Institute on the Environment
Where Has All the Research Gone? presented by Mike Tokach, professor, Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, Kansas State University

A new addition to this year’s conference will be the Distinguished Lecture, Bringing Prosperity to the Smallholder African Farmer Through Livestock, presented by Dr. Gregg BeVier, senior program officer with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Background about the Allen D. Leman Conference

Allen D. Leman, a University of Minnesota Extension veterinarian, and Jim Hanson, director of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s continuing education program, initiated the conference in 1974 to present new information and discuss issues important to the swine industry. In addition to sharing information and discussing issues, they hoped to influence practitioners and empower them to be leaders for the swine industry. The conference began in a small lecture hall on the St. Paul campus and evolved into the multi-session, international meeting it is today.

Throughout his career, Leman worked to define the link between swine disease and swine production. His unwavering dedication to the education of practicing veterinarians was manifested through his leadership of this conference. Leman left the University of Minnesota in 1986. After his death in 1992, the conference was named in his honor.
